Movie Review: Angels & Demons

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Before I begin, I must state that I have never read any of Dan Brown’ s novels therefore, when I enter the cinema for both the adaptation for the silver screen, I can say with a degree of certainty that I went into it with an open mind. With aside, let’s go into the real review about the movie.

After watching Da Vinci Code, you cannot help but expect much more for the installment of the Dan Brown’s series. You have the high hopes of being whirled through a nail-bitting string of mind-numbing codes and clues. But somehow, this movie did not manage to give me that feel. It felt rather mild infact compared the DVC.  The cinematography, however, was more spectacular as compared to DVC.  Despite it being night shots mainly,it made me  want to just go and visit Vatican City!

The acting. Tom Hanks and Ewan McGregor are definitely the two top actors. Flawless performance. The lady who played Vittoria Vetra somehow felt like she’s a ‘ka la fe’ (canto for rookie actress holding a secondary role).

The plot like all good plots had a twist in the end which made it rather interesting. Unlike the DVC which caused quite a stir with the Catholic Church, this movie however showed the Church in a very good light. I particularly like Cardinal Strauss when he told Langdon that the religion is flawed only because men is flawed. Truthfully, when I was growing up, this was basically taught to me by the dear late Reverend Father Arthur Julien; truly a servant of God. So while hearing Cardinal Strauss saying those word, it remindedly so much of Fr. Julien.

After watching this movie however, I do have some desire to want to read the book because the movie did leave out more ‘pockets’ of details which entices the viewers to want to know why things were done the way they were done!

Overall, I give this movie very worthy rating of 8/10 (you will want to go into the cinema to watch it again !  )

Warehouse Sale!

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Nothing makes you more ‘aunty’ than going for a Corningware/Pyrex/ Visions/Corelle  Warehouse sale. Despite it being such an ‘aunty’ event, I actually had a lot of fun! Thanks to my very sporting colleagues.

So this was the modus operandi: We went there and straight away we wanted to back off the sale. The line to pay was so long. At least  a couple of hundred folks before us. My experienced collegue, straight away lined up while the two of us went around looking at stuff. My first item was the Visionsware which I wanted for quite some time but the price tag put me off. Now with the great markdown, I grabbed one set, had it checked for cracks and scratches and went to my waiting colleague.

But since my eyes did wandered a bit before passing the trolley to my colleague, I just had to grab the casserole set which was going for a song. I grabbed that and plonked it down with the Visionsware and obediently went to queue while hurrying my colleague to also join in the frenzy!

While waiting, my other colleague also beginning to fill up our little plastic trolleys with more goodies.  By the time, we reached the checkout counter about 1hour later, our trolley was overflowing with about 4 feet of Visionsware, Corelle, Corningware and Pyrex!  Between the three of us, the bill came up to well over RM1000. This warehouse sale thing can be so addictive!

WIP: Alex-esque Cardigan

Monday, May 25th, 2009

I am sure by now that those who follows me on Twitter as well as those who has seen the status of this cardigan on Facebook would know that I am knitting my dear ole hubby something.

Alex has been complaining quite a bit that most of my knitted/crochetted items goes to someone else. His status as my other half obviously has earned him nothing. So after all the grumbling, I decided to make him something wearable. To set the record straight, I did knit him a beanie and a scarf which he says he cannot use it at all in Malaysia!

Due to that, I made a order to Cucumberpatch for this particular yarn since it was on sale!

JR_mocha

A mixture of viscose, nylon and angora actually made this yarn rather wearable in Malaysia although the angora bit traps a bit of heat but in very cold offices and perhaps even Genting Highlands, this cardigan would be perfect! Alex’s colour is Mocha while mine (since the yarn was on sale! ) is in Lavender.

The pattern that I am attempting is a lovely simple beginner friendly pattern by Mary Townsend and if you’re interested in making one for your man, it is here:  Rogers-esque Cardigan . Since the original pattern was named Rogers-esque, I’ve decided to name mine Alex-esque!

A Gathering with the girls!

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

I am so excited! After so many year, I am having an outing with the girls, i.e. Chui Ying and Linda!  Jiunn Hoong, if you’re reading this, we are so sad that you are not with us here!!

The last time we had such a gathering was during our undergraduate days when we did a weekend trip up to Bukit Tinggi Resort while Chui Ying’s sister was working there. That was probably way back in 2000; nine years ago!

This time though, we are going to crash over at Linda’s new place in Penang. Since she bought the place, she has been asking us to go over but somehow the timing was not right. But this time, with Chui Ying probably moving out of the country, we went ahead and planned! Hopefully everything will turn out fabulous! **fingers crossed**

Finally, a breather!

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

This is so long overdue. Due to the busy work schedule as well as the immense stress from the group projects the previous semester, this place was neglected badly! Good news is with yesterday’s exams over, I have almost 1 month of post-grad-free-days! Yippee!!!

thegroup

Looking back the previous semester, I have learnt one very important lesson, and I quote San @ ” To Hell with Diversification, Stick to Yer Mates! “

The fact was, this semester,  we ‘allowed’ the full timers, foreigners to be our group mates is also due to me wanting to have a more ‘diversified’ outlook on the subject. But nonetheless, the good thing in this whole mess is that I have learnt that friends are great support when you need to vent things out! And of course, having good groupmates (Inbha & Henry in the pic) more than enough make up for the stress the bad ones give you. So the following semester, being ‘kiasu’ we already formed groups! How about that!

Anyway, I am looking forward to just enjoying spending quiet evenings working out at the gym to lose all the late night snack fats and perhaps even go shopping when the sales are back!  I can’t wait!
