Too little time too many hobbies

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

I have been biting off more than I can chew!

I’m now a part-time post-grad student, full-time engineer, wife, daugther! The problem with me is that I am so interested in pursuing so many of these ‘free-time’ things @ hobbies while not having the time for them!!!

Current craze in knitting. I taught myself to knit from watching youtube videos and using a pair of bamboo chopsticks! Wanted to make sure I like the knitting business before I actually go and buy needles! Anyway now that school has started, I have even less time for knitting!Proud to announced that I completed one project. All those mini dishcloths I made while practicing doesn’t count! Thinking of making a wearable!

Of course, my rock climbing is still on. I try to go as often as I can in terms of time and money. The old climbing gym over at Summit USJ has already closed down so now we’re over at Camp-5 in 1-Utama.  The entrance fees is much more expensive but of course the enviroment and everything else is top-notch. You pay for what you get. Unfortunately, the only gripe we have as a group is that Camp-5 doesn’t publish their difficulty level unlike Summit which uses the French Grading System.

Sigh.

Starting a New Semester/Year

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Wow, it has been 1 year already since I started my post-graduate studies. Throughout this one year, I must say life have been very tough except for the last two weeks when I had my holidays. The rest of the time was either rushing for class after work, rushing for assignment, rushing to finish studying for exams! Talking about Life on the fast lane. Anyway, the whole craziness will start again. I hope this time, there won’t be so much damage!

My Not-So-Fleece Looking Booties

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Yet another crochet endeavour. This time I decided to make using the Shine Worsted Yarn I got from KnitPicks. As per the father’s request for girly colour, I chose the Coral yarn to work for this.

The pattern is from CrochetMe.com’s Fleece-Looking Booties.  Incidentally the pattern is inspired yet by another pattern; Ugg booties which is supposedly traditional Australian footwear. Need folks from Down under to confirm that for me!

Without further adieu, the pic of finished item! :) Again, it’s not a good picture. I should take some lessons from Kamkuey to improve my photography skills

BabyBootiesforLilSun

No idea why mine always comes out soft. Maybe it’s the yarn.

Good Manners: A thing of the past?

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Before I begin, perhaps a little history of my up-bringing is needed. My parents were educated in missionary schools when the foreign nuns and monks were actually running it. Therefore, their upbringing is strongly influenced by Western culture. On top of that, my dad joined the Royal Malaysian Navy which also have a very strict rule about being prim and proper while my mom, is the typical strict nurse you see on most movies and TV shows. So it is no surprise that my brothers and I were subjected to rather no-nonsense almost draconian kind of rule while growing up.

So let’s come back to the main topic. What I did notice is that my notion of good manners is rather different from that I observed from my peers (read as those within ±10 years), is rather different.

Case One:
During one of my post-grad classes,we had this wonderful English lecturer who pretty much looked like jolly Father Christmas (he is that big!) relating to us one of his experiences at a very posh restaurant back in England  or as he puts it, ” Most of the young fellows would probably have to spend his whole month’s wages just to dine here”. The waitress there was being very cheerful and chummy with its patrons went to serve my lecturer and said, “Well, darlings, what can I get you this evening?” A friendly greeting? My lecturer was rather piqued by that and then said, ” You don’t darling me and I am not your darling. You will address me properly!”

So this is the thing. Many of my classmates were rather taken aback by the reaction of my lecturer. They felt that there is nothing wrong with that but I on the other hand, actually agreed with my lecturer. Terms of endearment like that should not be used in an establishment such as that or even in work places where we hear it so often. Perhaps in a pub or another establishment of that sort, it would have been acceptable. Some of my classmates mentioned that perhaps our lecturer was old-school that is why he is offended. My opinion: The waitress just did not know the proper etiquette.

Case Two:

A group of us were attending some talk in a hall with fixed seating. A friend plonks himself on the seat and raised his legs with shoes on, and rests them on the armrests of the seat in front. Call me nosy, strict {insert any names} but in any circumstances, we should not do that. It is not only rude and bad manners but also very inconsiderate. Imagine, when you rest your arm, you find that your clean white cotton shirt has dirt stains just because someone needs to rest his feet on that armrest. Of course me being me, I lacked the finesse in addressing it and simply said, ” Hey, you should not do that. It’s rude!” This is part where everyone got a bit shocked including the person in question. Another friend then proceeds to relate that there is nothing wrong with that. Some people are offended but in his opinion, it is acceptable.

In the two cases related, what do you really think? Too rigid in keeping so-called manners? Do you agree or disagree. Would really love to hear from you.

Tomorrow is a Public Holiday!

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Yay!  Yet another public holiday for us who are working in Selangor. This is what I enjoy most about working in Selangor. We have one of the most holidays in the world if I may say so. As compared to our neighbours, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur/Putrajaya, we get extra days off for Nuzul Al-Quran; Quran recitations, I think and also Sultan’s Birthdays.

Sad thing is that Alex is not on a holiday since he’s having a week-long training. So I’ll be alone. Parents are working in the Wilayah side so cannot even go shopping with Mom. Although the sale season is officially over, the shopping malls here are still having some “best price” offers since Hari Raya is around the corner. Another two days off for us! Ain’t Malaysia just great?  Now, we just have to get rid of some buffoons up there to make Malaysia fabulous! lol
