Hooks and more hooks!

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I am so excited! Yesterday my first purchase on EBAY arrived. Although EBAY have been around for the longest time, I am a late bloomer to this online bidding thing. Last time my housemates used to buy using lelong.com.my but I never really bid for anything. Just let them know what I want and tumpang their account.

Without me going on and on here, let’s look at the purchase shall we?

Array of hooks with worsted weight yarn and Scissors
The merchandise was an collection of Bamboo Hooks ~ a total of 9 hooks all together. I just put the yarn and scissors in the background to improve the picture. After all I am using this along with the two items no?

Us15hook~biggest of the lot
The largest hook in the lot was the 10mm hook ~ US 15. This is an extremely huge hook. Looks like a mini drumstick really. But since it is made out of bamboo, it is amazingly light.

US6hook ~ smallest of the lot
The smallest is a 4mm hook ~ US 6. Some of my aluminum hook is this size. The aluminum is smoother to work with at the moment but the bamboo just feel to nice to touch!

me holding the US15 hook
Just so that you can imagine how big these hooks are, this is me holding the US15 hook with my left hand. Feels like holding those permanent marker pens!

I just can’t wait to start all my projects with these hooks!!!

What a busy weekend!

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I had quite an exciting weekend. Perhaps exciting is not the correct word to use. Tiring is more like it.

Anyway, on Friday night, Alex decided to take me out for dinner to somewhere other than the usual fare we have. We discovered this place in Bandar Puteri Puchong called Shabu-shabu steamboat. At first we thought this was like the one in SS2, where there is a buffet of steam boat. We were right about this shop having links with the one in SS2 but they changed the concept a bit.

They had the similar concept like the kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt) to move the little plates of food to put into your mini steamboat pot. Alex even made an observation that they practise the Kanban system. The little blocks which display the food item’s name as placed strategically to enable the kitchen to replace the right amount!

This is similar like most Taiwanese inspired steamboat place. Individual pots to minimize cross-contamination. Guess the SARS scared a lot of us out of our wits.

Then on Saturday, I was the judge of the YE Sales among the Klang Valley school (one exception of one school came all the way from Seremban to participate in this). A total of 15 schools were competing with each other. They have to abide by a strict set of rules which includes no help from corporate as well as teacher advisors in setting up their stalls and in sales pitch. Unfortunately for some of the overzealous advisors, they were more into it than the students themselves!

Throughout the event, as the judge I did learn a lot from the kids and know that it is important that our Malaysian children are exposed to other skills rather than those taught in school. As most parents complained that our education system is very exam-oriented but when it comes to having activities such as this, not only the students themselves need to put in the effort, but parents plays a vital role in supporting them. Most of the parents of these children were there with their children for more than 13 hours! Kudos to them. Kudos to all those patrons who bought stuff from these kids. Although it wasn’t the best quality stuff but the little show of support definitely goes a long way.

Throughout the years, you can see that fashion comes and goes. But it is funny that when it comes to T-shirts, the look seem to be rather evergreen.

Athena and plants aren’t the best of friends.

Friday, July 25th, 2008

I have to admit this. I am never a good gardener. That is why my lawn is completely sealed up with concrete and little pebbles.

The only little planter I have now  is the box made by the developer which I tried to plant sunflowers, if some of you can remember. That turned out alright but then when the flower finally withered, Alex went, “Oh no, who’s gonna clear that up?”

So now, the garden planter is home to three species of plants.

One, Mother-in-law’s tongue (lidah jin, I don’t really know what to call it)

Two, Nephentes (periuk kera), so proud of myself on this one. The plant is still producing more and more periuks. :)

Three, Some odd plants with leaves being dark green on the topside and deep purple on the bottom.

We did purchase an indoor planter which we left in still indoor without a plant because Alex and I are still deciding who should be taking care of it. But I really should purchase more planters, especially the outdoor planters so that our house doesn’t look like it’s been abandoned!
