Happy For Pete’s Sake Day

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Overheard on the radio this morning, February 26th is declared as For Pete’s Sake Day. Although I do use the expression quite often but never really thought that it is has a day on its own!

So I decided to do a little snooping around with Google and found out who is this Pete and why do we always do things for HIS SAKE! (not Japanese Sa-ke, **hehe)

: Biblical origins. Think of St Peter. Think of the omnipresent medieval church and think of hitting your thumb with a hammer. You can’t swear, else the local priests will have you up before the Bishop and the Lord alone knows what the outcome of that will be, so you exclaim, in appropriate tone of voice, “For Saint Peter’s sake” and carry on erecting the shelves. This phrase was amended to “For Pete’s Sake” in later, less religiously oppressive, times

This is called a “minced oath,” a substitution of a less offensive word.

FOR PETE’S SAKE - The phrase is simply a polite version of a common and profane expression involving the name of Christ. We’d surmise that the original ‘Pete’ was St. Peter.” From “Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins” by William and Mary Morris. Substituting less offensive words - like Godfrey Daniel for the other GD - is called a minced oath.

So now we are know why we say it. We like our oaths minced *wink!

Impromptu Holiday!

Monday, February 25th, 2008

I’m so excited. Will be going for an impromptu holiday in the middle of March. Alex was sent over for a company project and will be there for one month. Since he’s there already, we thought, we’ll just take a holiday before coming back here.

Booked accomodation for one place and waiting for confirmation on the other one. Hopefully things will be smooth.

Can’t wait!

The Law

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

This semester I am taking Business & Commercial Law. Hopefully I won’t do as bad as I did in the last semester. Kekeke.

Anyway, in the reading material given to us, there is one article entitled, ” How Not To Succeed in Law School“, The Yale Law Journal, Vol. 100. In that article, there is this passage:

Know all men by these presents that I hereby give, grant, bargain, sell, release, convey, transfer and quitclaim all my right, title, interest, benefit and use whatever in, of, and concerning this chattel, otherwise known as an orange, or citrus orantium, together with all the appurtenances thereto of skin, pulp, pip, rind, seeds and juice for his own use and behoof, to himself and his heirs in fee simple dorever, free from all liens, encumbrances, easements, limitations, restraints, or conditions whatsoever, and all prior deeds, tranfers or other documents whatsoever, any and all prior deeds, transfers or other documents whatsoever, now or anywhere made to contrary notwithstanding, will full power to bite, cut, suck or otherwise eat the said orange or to give away the same, with or without its skin, pulp, pip, rind, seeds, or juice

This is what lawyers are famous for. Write in a lingo that no one understands. The long winded passage simple means, I give you this orange, do what you will with it! I really agree with the writer when he mentioned that “Virtually all lawyers write as if they were paid by the word”

But by taking this module, in these two weeks itself, it changed my perception of how the law is. Not so much of the lawyers though! Let’s see how things will be towards the end of the module ;)

Results are OUT!

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

UPDATE : Got my results but seemed that the university made a mistake and included an extra subject which I did not register nor did I sit for the exams. For that I got a big ZERO on the slip. Tsk tsk. Anyway, I passed the two modules I sat for. Hopefully they don’t come back to me and tell me that they got it wrong and I failed the two.

Got this in the university e-mail when I checked 2 days ago.

Dear All,

Kindly be informed that the MBA examination results will be released today. You may collect your results from KLTC. Full time students staying in Semenyih campus may collect from the Faculty office.
However please take note that marks are still provisional subject to the approval of the External Examiner.

I really hope I pass {pray pray}

This is a shocker. I checked my blog and some of my posts went missing? Something must be wrong with the server. Earlier got some timeout messages while trying to access and now missing posts??
